Halle Berry became the mother of a new baby girl recently. Do you all think that the baby will be affected by her multiracial parentage? What do you all think about Halle's new love and baby daddy? http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20171859,00.html

I always considered berry Biracial. her husband is white. My understanding is that the baby looks like any other white baby. Good for them. The confusion will probably come if or when Berry tries to "VALIDATE" this child's rather negligible blackness. We all know how much some of US have to cling to any possibility of LIKENESS. No matter how obscure. As to her baby's father? He came up as they say in the hood. Now hopefully blacks can move on and cultivate more worthy images than the Berry's of the world.

I don't think that her child will be affected because of her ethnicity(ies)! Money and celebrity are powerful shields against what the common (wo)man experiences on the racial front. This child was born to advantage, which outweighs racial concerns in terms of how she will be treated by and accepted into majority society.

just curious ... why do you refer to this child as a quadroon baby? I just don't get all warm and fuzzy when I hear people refer to others in this way... what does it mean?

It's an insulting term. Slaveowners used it to refer to a woman who was 1/4 black (1 black grandparent). I was making a commentary on American history with it--the question of whether the child will be affected by her parentage being a topic of historical interest. Historically quadroons and octoroons were the concubines of wealthy slaveowners--enough white in them that they weren't 'dirty' black, but still enough black in them that they were niggers and could be kept and owned. Their parentage kept them in a kind of no-man's land between black and white. Thus, the effect of their parentage was that they received some benefits from it in material terms, but received far more detriments as a result. The same pattern is unlikely to hold true now, but I was also commenting on people's modern fascination with biracial, mixed, etc. children and many comments that I have heard over the years re "oh, so cute, you must be mixed!" "Mixed babies are so cute!" "I want a mixed baby with good hair!" and all that kind of nonsense.

Yep... it's definitely a loaded, wicked, evil term... filled with lots of history AND hate. I was kinda curious because you didn't seem like the type to throw around so much hate towards an innocent child. And I really don't understand the "hate" towards Halle Berry... I think her mother did an outstanding job preparing her to take her place in this world... as a black woman... I've never heard Halle refer to herself as anything else but Black... she never hid the fact that her mother was white... As African Americans, we all have differing degrees of "africaness" in our blood but it's those "common" experiences as a minority in American that binds us together. Halle IS my sister. I'm sure she has a very interesting perspective to share on what it's like to be a black woman in this country and it probably isn't too unlike the experiences of any of us.
I also admire the mother of Obama...I can only imagine what she had to go through to raise a black male child...Shoot, white women are stepping up to the plate nowadays. Especially when you consider how it was in the 60's and 70's... You gotta give credit where credit is due...my hat is off to them...

Halle, from what I've read of her, suffered far more trauma from having an absentee father than from being biracial. Sure she encountered external folks acting a fool calling her names but that was more about them than about her and kids are resiliant. Hell we all will get picked on about something. Black kids who are high yella will get picked on by other black kids. I used to get picked on all of the time because I have slanting eyes and they'd call me "Endora or Genie or something stupid that's just life. But what Halle went through when her father abandoned the family was more deep rooted and those scars lasted a lifetime and probably set the pattern for her disastrous encounters with the men in her life as an adult woman.
I've often heard people over dramatize the fate that lies in wait for biracial children. When white people say it, "These children will have problems". I take it to mean that the white folks are the ones with that have a problem with it.
IMO, growing up in a broken home with issues is far worse than being biracial.
I once stood outside union square on a Saturday morning and saw two gay guys pushing a pram (yes not a buggy but a fancy pram), with a little cocoa baby about 10 months old sitting up in the pram. This little baby was decked out in fancy clothes with bows all in her hair. I saw shopping bags with children logos stuffed under the pram. Both parents were cooing at her.
I didn't go up and introduce myself but I just remember this warm feeling coming over me as I watched that black baby girl soak up the attention from these two guys. I'm thinking they were gay and had either adopted her or fostered her.
I remember clearly the thought that went through my head. "What a lucky baby". They are going to spoil and dote on her.
Somebody else would look at that scene and say what a sad situation, that child is going to grow up so mixed up. Whatever... I didn't feel that when I was watching this scene for about 15 minutes or so.
It was a beautiful day, the sun was out, people were out enjoying and this little black girl was getting the love from two devoted father figures. It was a blessing.

Wesley Snipes bust her eardrum so she is deaf in one ear, Her first husband, David Justice cheated on her so did her last husband Eric Bennet. So let's see how this guy Gabriel Aubry will treat her. So far he's given her a baby, will he give her grief too? Stay tuned... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vVi0P2F44tQ&NR=1

Wesley Snipes bust her eardrum so she is deaf in one ear I don't know, Devineone?... I have heard/read Wesley Snipes say publicly, a few times, that he wasn't the one to damage Halle's eardrum. I have yet to ever hear Christopher Williams say that he didn't do it - I think it was Christopher. His silence speaks volumes to me. On another note. Aubry is a very handsome man!

Maybe Bigmomma, I just saw this and distance has always been a factor in her previous relationships: November 14, 2007. MediaTakeOut.com has learned that Halle Berry and Gabriel Autry are having a major fight. According to reports, the Oscar winner expected to raise their child in Los Angeles, but her model boyfriend is completely against it. According to reports, he wants to stay in New York to further his career. A source is quoted as saying, "She's been shocked by the news. Halle had always assumed Gabriel would move to the west coast so they could live together as one happy family. If Gabriel stays in New York, it'll mean long separations. She knows their relationship won't survive and has been begging him to change his mind." Word is, however, the 41-year-old Halle is determined that her baby not experience the distant relationship she had with her own father. The source adds, "Halle hardly knew her own dad and they were still estranged at the time of his death, so she's desperate for her daughter to have a father she sees regularly."

I have yet to ever hear Christopher Williams say that he didn't do it - I think it was Christopher. His silence speaks volumes to me. On another note. Aubry is a very handsome man! This came from the following website: (Don't know how true it is, but I had read previously that Wesley snipes did it). http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000648/newshttp://www.imdb.com/news/wenn/2004-01-15#celeb7Wesley Snipes Named As Halle Berry Abuser 15 January 2004 (WENN) Actor Wesley Snipes has been exposed as the abusive ex-lover of Halle Berry, who struck the actress so hard, she lost most of the hearing in her right ear. R&B singer Christopher Williams - who dated Berry in the early 1990s - has made the startling accusation against the Blade star after getting upset with the number of people who assume it was him who dealt the screen beauty the damaging blow. He tells entertainment news website Eurweb, "The stuff they wrote about (me) and Halle was totally false. They said something like I busted her eardrum, and I'm tired of it. I never said it (before) but I'm so tired of people thinking I'm the guy (who did it). Wesley Snipes busted her eardrum, not me." Williams, who has a child with ex-girlfriend Stacey Dash, also takes a swipe at Berry - insisting the twice-married star may have personality problems which have contributed to her string of broken relationships, most recently from Eric Benet. He adds, "I have (men) come up to me like, 'How could you just leave Halle Berry' I'm like, how could you just leave the last relationship you was (in)? (Halle) is just a woman, but because her name is in lights, people are damned near ready to bare their souls. "They would probably crucify Jesus again just to get with her. It's funny because the stars that get all of the good write-ups, you go and meet them and they are total a**holes."
