A Black History Life

« on: February 07, 2009, 03:22:27 PM »

I'll be dammed!!! Robin Thicke is singing my favorite love song of the past couple years. That "Sweetest Love" joint is going to be on any collection I have for favorite love songs of this decade. He put his foot waaaayyyy into that Soul record!

It might be my favorite Blue-eyed Soul record of all time. Now, if you're a little young, Blue-eyed Soul is an old school term for white folks that sing Soul/R&B music.

What's some of your favorite Blue-eyed Soul joints? Here's a few of mine.

Hall & Oates - Sara Smile
Michael McDonald - I Keep Forgetting
Bobby Caldwell - What You Won't Do For Love
Teena Marie - Whatever she sangs
Lisa Stansfield - All Around The World, All Woman
Joss Stone - Spoiled (LOVE that song)
Elton John - Bennie and the Jets
George Michael - Careless Whisper, I Knew You Were Waiting

My dad made us listen to all of 'his favorites" instead of the radio.  He had an album called 'Silk Degrees' and he used to play "Lowdown" all the time.  I believe that was by Boz Scaggs.

Devineone, that Boz Skaggs joint is a classic on black radio. I just found out he was white a year or so ago! That's the joint, too!

I forgot one on my other list. Michael Franks - One Bad Habit

You know that one, don't you Devineone!

Shep I'm not familiar with that song by Michael Franks, but I do like these songs by him.  My dad had a few of his records too.
"When I give my love to you" with Brenda Russell I think.
"The lady wants to know"
And Soulmate from his album Dragonfly summer (couldn't find that on youtube).

Devineone, that song by Michael Franks, "When I give my love to you" is one of the tracks that I'll put on a lite-rock quiet storm mix cd.. Grin

People always ask where did you get that song?? Cheesy Cheesy

Yes, I am a frustrated wannabe Quiet Storm DJ.."Welcome to the eye of the storm..Where it's always peaceful, quiet and tranquil..I'm Cool Breeze and I'll be your host for the next four hours" Cue Smokey Robinson's "Quiet Storm" or "Between The Sheets" by the Isley Brothers..

One of these days I'm gonna do a podcast of me playing quiet storm jams..I've got a lot of r&b on wax that I never hear on the radio any more..

Hey, Shep, Devineone..A young lady here at my job asks if you guys remember an r&b love song from the 80's called "You and Me"?

She says that the first lyrics are: How would you feel if I asked you to spend your whole life with me?

It does sound like a song I may have heard..I'm gonna have to call my boy at The Big DM to see if he knows who she's talking about ..

Hey CB, I went to one of my sources, a DJ who knows just about everything there is to know about old school music and if he can't find it, then it can't be found.  Is this what you're referring to?
"Rockie Robbins - you and me"
He also recommends this site for hard to find music.

I'll take that money order now as a finders fee.  Grin

Man I wonder who's playing the bass on this song, because he's bad!!  That bass line is awesome!... Wonder if it's the same bassist from "Aurra" Isn't that the dude from "Slave'?

I remember the song now, but I never knew the artist..It's pretty smooth..A flood of memories..Back in the day..They don't make cuts like this anymore..

The cat on the bass is off the hook..

Hey, don't you owe me money for my lemonade recipe?  Cheesy

CB For Real! Shocked  I forgot he played the bass I had to find him on Youtube.  He's bad and has a wonderful voice! Larry Graham Bass solo"  That Mark Adams who I think also played with Aurra was badazz.  He played with "Slave", man all those cats were just bad.  I love me some bass! (sorry to digress from blue-eyed soul, but how can you talk about soul without mentioning the electric bass.  Grin

See this was back in the day when artists really had something to bring to the table.  Cheesy  I am glad now that my dad introduced us to a lot of artists, otherwise I wouldn't have been exposed to such good music and artistry.  He had a lot of albums, but unfortunately he didn't protect them and many of them warped from the heat in the south.  Before he passed, my siblings and I bought a lot of CD's for him of the artists he had on albums.  He was always grateful for that.

BTW, you're right, I do owe you for that pink lemonade recipe so we'll call it even. Grin

BTW CB, this DJ, my source who gave me the "You and Me" song is a white dude can you believe it?  Shocked  He knows everything and I do mean everything about old school stuff as far back as 60's and forward to mid 90's, maybe even more than that.  He knows obscure stuff too.   I can't quite wrap my mind around that.  He said he used to listen to black radio stations when he was in college when most of his frat brothers were listening to top 40 pop music.  He fell in love with it back when it was playing on the air waves and he made it his life's love.

I think Michael Franks is an excellent songwriter and lyricists, I would even say on par with the great Stevie Wonder.  I really like his music.  Have you heard Now Love has no end" featuring Valerie Simpson from his Barefoot on the beach album?  It's a great example of his lyricism and musicality.  I also like his 'When Sly calls".

CB I think that would be great to hear a podcast of your quiet storm mix.  Would you include some Gerald Albright, Miles Jaye, Grover Washington Jr, Will Downing and of course the Blue-eyed soul artists? Smiley...

CoolBreeze and Devineone, I'm glad you all found that song because I would've racked my brain forever trying to remember it. That was the joint, though.

Look here, CoolBreeze, you can have the quiet storm if I'm on for the 4 hours prior to that. I've already got my dj name and intro. I got my dj name from a Natalie Cole song. At 6 o'clock from my intro, and at 10 o'clock when I sign off for CoolBreeze's Quiet Storm, you'll hear Natalie Cole singing in the background -

Hey, Mr. Melody, you're on my mind constantly
And I think of you the whole day long
Hey, Mr. Melody, you mean the whole world to me
Without you I would have no song
Hey, Mr. Melody, you got me hummin' to your crazy beat
The more I hear it the more I like it
You really made a hit with me
Mr. Melody, Mr. Melody

Whatcha say, Devineone, can Mr. Melody and CoolBreeze keep ya tuned in?

I'm cool with that, Shep and my friend at The Big DM says that he like your choice of Natalie Cole's "Mr Melody" as your signature song..Me? There's so many bad slow jams that my intro will be different every night except sunday when Smokey's "Quiet Storm" will be the intro song..On two sunday nights a month I might even have a "relationship expert" on from the west coast to help folks with their love lives.. Wink

That's right ladies..Sunday through Thursday at 10 pm join me, Cool Breeze and I'll help you unwind with "The Quiet Storm"..

Heck Yeah! I'd listen to your program over what's playing on the airwaves today. Shoot Tom Joyner might even tune in and take notes. Smiley

Hey Shep a band I gig with actually performed Mr. Melody about 3 years ago at Tavern on the Green in Central Park.  These folks had so much darn money.  They had a full out 18 piece big band, then a DJ, then a jazz trio plus 5 singers, (The guy was some type of TV producer or something).  It was a good paying gig and we got to eat well too!
